Around fifty automobiles have been marked with what appears to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.
Automobiles, walls and mailboxes were marked, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a statement.
Law enforcement say they were contacted late on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored liquid.
The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they added.
Officers then located many other smeared cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under laws banning the public display of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement say early analysis show the substance was most likely human blood.
"There is still no indication as to its origin; officials are currently not aware of any physical harm in association with the event," they commented.
Municipal representatives stated they were attempting "to resolve the incident" and have asked to the community for information.
An important political figure said the incident left him speechless and needed to be addressed rapidly.
"This act strikes at the core of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on online, recalling the death of nine victims by a shooter focusing on individuals of foreign heritage in five years prior.
