Right-leaning reactions to the partial release of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while different voices lamented how extensive redactions portray former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric
Administration representatives justified the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in American history has a President or the Justice Department been this open with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter describing the redaction process.
Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's identity and likeness are visible in some of the documents, the extensive redactions prompt significant concerns about what may be concealed behind them. Some Republicans swiftly called for greater openness.
“People are raging and walking away,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship break the statute, and suggested that a future Congress may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this file dump grossly fails to adhere to both the intent and the letter of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Conservative Commentators Swing Behind the Disclosure
But, some rightwing pundits and Trump allies swung firmly in support of the administration.
The release—from a justice department run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are entirely censored, and numerous of the men depicted in photographs have their faces blacked out.
Yet a few do not, including high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, in particular, enabled some rightwing figures to launch the attack.
“It’s quite ironic how the political left wrongly claimed President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Former President Campaign Issues Statement
Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been hiding these documents for months only to release them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“The release is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal forever. So they can release as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response added.
Overall Rightwing Comment Seems Muted
However, broader discourse on the right was relatively subdued following the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the loud demands for action that preceded the congressional approval to enact a law mandating the documents' publication.
The commentator, who recently secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal proponents for a complete disclosure. In February, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing personalities were provided physical folders of files that contained little new data.
