Larian Studios Reveal a Latest Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG Ever

The speculation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is creating a completely new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio clarified that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team is likely crafting a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it sparked the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, branching plots, and complex character building—qualities that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities that are viable by choosing a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also wonderfully flexible, letting players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can look forward to more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
