A person who laced candy with sleeping medication and gave them to children at a summer camp in the region has pleaded guilty to sexual offenses against two children both nine and 10.

Jon Ruben was taken into custody after eight youngsters and a grown-up experienced illness at Stathern Lodge in mid-summer.

The senior citizen, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, pleaded guilty to a series of 17 offences when he was present at the judicial center on Friday.

Nevertheless, he disputed a single sexual charge he was accused of, which was against a nine-year-old child.

The accused was held in detention ahead of a further hearing on 28 November.

'Sweet game'

The prosecutor, prosecuting, outlined the criminal behavior to the legal proceedings.

She stated his victims were disadvantaged youngsters who were participating in a summer camp which he ran.

Ruben played a "treat game" with the children, Mrs Prior said, in which he would access the boys' rooms when they were getting ready for bed and tell them to eat sweets "as quickly as they can".

She stated to the judge Ruben had played this game with the children "repeatedly", and children had previously fallen ill the next day.

She said the man had been able to explain this repeatedly as the youngsters being "overexcited from fun", until his family member had concerns in July 2025.

Mrs Prior KC continued: "This year his stepson had suspicions about the situation, justifiably.

"They decided to investigate in the defendant's belongings."

Mrs Prior KC said materials including baby oil, Vaseline and injection devices were discovered, and his stepchild contacted the authorities about his worries.

She said the defendant continued to engage in the "treat game" with six children that evening - Saturday 26 July - and they were all sick the subsequent day.

"Law enforcement" had not gone out by that stage," she added.

The police watchdog, the police conduct office, had stated that it was investigating the police response of the events.

Mrs Prior stated the youngsters were struggling to walk due to being ill, so the stepson notified the law enforcement again.

She explained the man then conducted the "treat game" in a area of five children.
