The Former President's Progressive Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" policies represent an grave risk to the continent's identity. However, this argument rests on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The true danger confronting Europe is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Growth Divide Separating the US and Europe

Statistics paint a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, while a mere 13.5% increase for the EU. During this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly half of the world’s top fifty technology firms are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Question

The growing disparity stems from superior productivity growth in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of world technology leadership is decidedly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at more than $10bn, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity raises a pressing question: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a contest between two between the United States and China, with European nations entering at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several key factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and agile system for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a true capital markets union, a factor that caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hinder Europe. A US startup can launch a product under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is divided among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to advance serious reform. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for sweeping reforms.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses considerable advantages: skilled human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and premier labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly boost productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a critical moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
