Together Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy horror films: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere on the Hulu service. On the surface, it could look like conventional physical horror, but inside Together exists a profound examination about how we choose to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The story starts when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the rural area for Millie’s job. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their new home, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity starts to affect the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The whole movie is a slow burn of scares, weaving in moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the sort of issues that arise in most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu now.
